HOW TO WRITE DATES IN ENGLISH
The format for writing dates is different in many countries so there are several ways to write the date. In today's blog post, we are going to be looking at the American and British format of writing dates.
American English
In the American English format, the month is written first, followed by the day and then the year. It is also important to include a comma between the day and year. For example: January 5, 2022. If you would like to include the weekday, it would be: Wednesday, January 5, 2022.
If you decide to include the weekday, remember to write a comma before writing the month.
If you only want to write numbers (numeral format), it would be written as: 01/05/22
British English
The British English date format is common in several countries. In this format, the day comes before the month and year.
For example: 24 August 2022 or 24/08/22 (numeral format)
In the British English date format, placing a comma between the month and year is optional. For example: 24th August, 2022.
When a date is written in a sentence, it is common to include “the” before the day and “of” before the month in British English. For example:
“Peter was born on the 5th of June.” or “I graduated on the 16th of September.”
Another rule to follow in the British English date format is to use ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th…)
For example: 3rd March 2022.
This can also be done in American English but it is optional.
