Most vs. Almost

Many Japanese English speakers say “almost” when they really mean “most”.

Just remember that “most” means more than half and “almost” means nearly but not quite.

For example:

“Most people in America speak English.” NOT: “Almost people in America speak English.”

You can say: “Almost all people in America speak English.”

But in the first case, we might imagine more than 50% and in the second case we might imagine close to 100%.
