EXPRESSIONS WHEN TALKING ABOUT DATES, MONTHS AND TIME

When talking about dates, months and time, we tend to use different prepositions (on, at, in, of, from) depending on the situation.

On

We use on when we are talking about weekdays.

For example:

I have a test on Wednesday.

水曜にテストがあるんです。

On can also be used to talk about an exact date.

For example:

Ayumi’s birthday is on the 18th of August.

あゆみの誕生日は8月18日です。

At

We usually use at when talking about time.

For example:

Peter has soccer practice at 5 p.m.

ピーターは午後5時からサッカーの練習がある。

In

In can be used when talking about the four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn/ Fall, Winter)

For example:

I always wear my favorite jacket in winter.

冬はいつもお気に入りのジャケットを着ています。

We can also use in to talk about time, months, years, centuries, decades, and historical periods.

For example:

The bus will leave in 10 minutes.

バスは10分後に発車します。

I will start my new job in April.

4月から新しい職場で働くことになりました。

I graduated from university in 2018.

2018年に大学を卒業しました。

Humans have made a lot of new technology in the 21st century.

21世紀に入り、人類は多くの新しい技術を作り出しました。

The two friends hadn’t seen each other in a decade.

二人の友人は10年ぶりの再会であった。

There were many dinosaurs in the Jurassic period.

ジュラ紀にはたくさんの恐竜がいました。

Of 

Of can be used to talk about a particular day in a month.

For example:

The 4th of July.

7月4日。

The 25th of December. 

12月25日 

The 1st of January.

1月1日

I will be traveling to Italy on the 5th of September.

9月5日にイタリアに旅行します。

From 

From is used to talk about the date or time when something begins.

For example:

I will be going on a business trip from June.

6月から出張に行く予定です。

Kaito was at the libray from 7a.m.

海藤は朝7時から図書館にいた。
